Sarihat-Hamdani pairing tops ‘bermukun’ competitio­n for seniors

MIRI: Team Sonia and Oja beat four others to emerge champion in a ‘ bermukun’ competitio­n jointly organised by the Welfare Department and Senior Citizen Activity Centre ( Pawe) Miri here on Saturday.

The team, comprising Sarihat Yahya and Hamdani Bolhassan, took home a cash prize of RM200 and a hamper.

Placed second were Daud Lamat and Lan Patah, representi­ng Miri Kedayan Associatio­n, while team Seri Warisan came in third.

They received RM150 and RM100 respective­ly, as well as a hamper each.

Team Merpati Terbang Bebas was placed fourth while Pewaris Sungai Rait/Pulau Melayu, fi fth. Each received a hamper.

Present to give away the prizes was Welfare Department Miri officer Sharifah Ranimah Wan Hashim.

The two-day programme themed ‘Seniors Got Talent’ featured activities such as karaoke, bermukun, group dance, as well as cooking and walking competitio­ns.

Bermukun is a popular traditiona­l entertainm­ent among the Malay, Kedayan and Melanau communties in Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, Labuan and Kalimantan.

It comprises singing, dancing and ‘berpantun’ (rhyming verse), and is usually performed at weddings, special occasions and ceremonies.
