Flood-affected schools receive RM522,300 in aid
MIRI: The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research, has given assistance worth RM522,300 of non- ICT equipment to 10 schools in northern Sarawak affected by the floods this year.
The schools fall under the district education offices of Limbang, Miri, Tatau and Sebauh.
Its minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin said this was one of the ways the Sarawak government was assisting schools in Sarawak that were badly affected by the flood.
He said this after presenting assistance to the affected schools, and donation to the fire victims of SK Batu Bungan in Mulu, here yesterday.
Manyin also said similar assistance to replace damaged non- ICT equipment worth RM401,700 was given to schools in the central region ( Julau, Kanowit, Selangau, Dalat and Mukah) on Oct 12.
Beside non- ICT equipment, the Sarawak government would also replace flood- damaged furniture and ICT equipment in 53 schools throughout Sarawak by next month at a cost of RM2 million and RM1.075 million respectively.
He said about RM4 million in assistance was needed by schools affected by the food this year. Most of the schools were in the rural areas.
On the fire incident at Batu Bungan in Mulu on July 25, Manyin said his ministry and Sarawak Education Department had managed to collect RM112,600 from the public to be given to the fire victims.
The fire has resulted in the loss of a teacher - Catherine Tiwi – whose estate would receive RM33,000 while her parents would receive RM10,000, and the balance to the teachers.
The money was handed over to head of school management section of the Sarawak Education Department, Omar Mahli, who received it on behalf of the fire victims.
The ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Sudarsono Osman, district education officers from Limbang, Sebauh, Tatau and Miri and headmistress of SK Batu Bungan were also present at the function.
