TVet must also be taught in rural schools, highlights assemblyman

-

LONG SAN: The development of highly- skilled students must be given equal emphasis in rural schools, says Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

In this regard, he said that technical vocational education and training ( TVet) should be seen as being on par with academic education, as the former opens up vast opportunities in various fields.

“Students are required to equip themselves with a variety of knowledge and skills in order to create a smart and competitive generation.

“The TVet stream has become an important platform for students in the country today. Hence, there are ample opportunities to be seized by students to further their studies.

“The Industrial Training Centres ( ILPs), community colleges, polytechnics and National Youth Skills Institutes ( IKBNs) provide various skills courses. Students only need to choose the discipline that they wish to acquire at an affordable cost,” said the assemblyman at the 33rd SMK Temenggong Datuk Lawai Jau’s ‘ Excellence Awards and Graduation’ ceremony here recently.

Dennis said mastering various skills and expertise is crucial in today’s digital era.

“Utilise learning opportunities to explore your maximum potential and make learning a fun and meaningful process. There is no shortcut to success in life except hard work, and having skills will encourage you to become individuals of excellence, glory and distinction.

“Despite living deep in the interior areas, we must not be left behind in education. We must prove to the outside world that we, the students from Upper Baram, can be as good as our counterparts in the urban centres.”

SMK Temenggong Datuk Lawai Jau principal Rechard Emang and the school’s parent- teacher association chairman Maurice Lawai were also present at the function.
