Villages, schools along gas pipeline get Petronas’ reassuranc­e

MIRI: Vil lages and schools located along the Petronas’ Sabah- Sarawak gas pipeline ( SSGP) in Baram have been reassured that their wellbeing and welfare would be well taken care of.

“SSGP team members would make every effort to regularly visit and return to those areas located along our pipeline to spend time with the folk there and take part in their activities – once every three months each year,” its spokespers­on said adding they have were always in touch with the rural communitie­s.

“For every visit, we will also bring along local enforcemen­t agencies including the police and the Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba),” the spokespers­on told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

Thei r recent visit to the interior of Baram was from Oct 23- 25 aimed at strengthen­ing relationsh­ip between the rural communitie­s, mostly the Penans, who live along the SSGP and government agencies including Bomba, Petronas SSGP, the police and the Land and Survey Department.

“It also seeks to enhance fire safety awareness among the rural communitie­s,” said the spokespers­on.

Several activities were held during the visit including a talk and demonstrat­ion on kitchen fire safety to over 400 residents including several Penan villages namely Long Latei, Long Kevok, Long Kawa and Long Ludin, Long Selulong and a Kelabit village Long Seridan.

“We also handed over fire extinguish­ers to longhouse chiefs for their use.

“A talk on fire safety in schools and villages was held for residents who were also provided with emergency response plan in the event of unforseen situations,” said the spokespers­on, adding that the police also conducted a talk on drug abuse to students and the villagers.

Meanwhi le, the Land and Survey Department briefed the rural residents on the surveying of customary land.

SSGP members who took part in the three- day visit included its operat ion suppor t unit executives John Fery James, Victoria Winsome Southwell, Fairuz Asyika Rosli, James Jimbau Jelema, Joseph Jok and Eric Anderias.

The visitors also comprised personnel from Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) Zone 6 including its Bomba Marudi chief Maureen Sim, Corporal Fadly Jasri John from Long Lama police station and Land and Survey Department’s Mohamad Matali and Ismail Chik.
