KUCHING: About 150 alumni and 11 industry partners joined the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus Alumni and Partners Appreciation Dinner held at a hotel here on Monday.

In his welcoming speech, Swinburne Sarawak deputy vicechancellor and chief executive officer Professor John Wilson thanked the industry partners for their contribution to the university and looked forward to more collaborative ventures in the future.

“In the long term, your (industry partners) involvement not only translates to improving the pool of human capital for your respective industry, but in a broader sense, you also play an important role in uplifting the socio- economic standing of society in general.”

Wilson also said that 90 per cent of Swinburne graduates had been absorbed by various industries six months after graduating.

“I am confident that when you employ a Swinburne graduate, you are getting a highly enthusiastic and well-trained individual.”

According to Wilson, Swinburne Sarawak has over 6,000 graduates to date and hoped that all the graduates will continue to keep in touch with the university.

On future plans, he said that the university aims to increase the student population from the current 3,500 to 5,000 as part of its commitment to make higher education available to more young people.

“To this end, we are working closely with Yayasan Sarawak and other sponsoring bodies as well as the industry.”
