Rotary Club presses on with mission despite long journey
MIRI: The long journey failed to daunt the Rotary Club of Miri team from accomplishing its mission of bringing healthcare to the Bisaya community in Limbang recently.
The team of volunteers, comprising medical- health personnel and social workers, keeps tabs on the wellbeing of the villagers dogged by limited medical services.
“This tenth mission was participated by over 20 volunteers consisting of members of Rotary Club of Miri, three doctors including a dentist from Lawas, medical officers from Miri Hospital, private clinics and Klinik Desa Batu Danau.
“This programme provided free healthcare services including health screening to residents of Kampung Bidang and nearby villages such as Kampung Lembuak, Kampung Mageliong, Kampung Pandak and Kampung Terumba,” a spokesperson told The Borneo Post yesterday.
More than 300 villagers and school students turned up for free medical services during the programme held at Kampung Bidang in Batu Danau, Limbang.
“School students were also given medication that kills fleas and worms,” the spokesperson added.
The outreach programme also partnered with Pustaka Miri which organised various programmes like robotic shows, colouring activities and handing out of school stationery and water bottles for over 100 school students from participating villages, apart from giving them the opportunity to watch movies for free.
In his address at the closing ceremony, Bisaya community leader Temenggong Nicholas Boyok commended the efforts of the volunteers to serve the underprivileged people which benefitted them greatly.
Meanwhile, Kampung Bidang village chief Lukung Simpok thanked Rotary Club of Miri and Pustaka Miri for choosing the village to conduct the community outreach programme.
He hoped that such programme will continue to be held in the future.
Present were Rotary Club of Miri president Jenny Liew, member Temenggong Elizabeth Deng who is also Kayan paramount chief and Pustaka Miri librarian Lilian Baun Pulo.
