KUCHING: The Sarawak government will provide quality pre- school education for children in both rural and urban areas across Sarawak.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, this is in line with Sarawak’s focus on quality human capital development.

He also observes that many developed nat ions such as Singapore and Finland are placing great emphasis on preschool education, especial ly on Mathematics, Science and languages.

Sarawak c ould work on providing better basic education for its children for the betterment of generations to come, Abang Johari spoke during SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman (STAR)’s reunion and appreciation night at Penview Convention Centre ( PCC) Demak here last Saturday.

The chief minister said his administration could utilise the revenue from oil and gas tax to provide quality pre- school education for Sarawak children.

He said he had instructed the Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah to look into the research work necessary to pave the way towards establishing quality pre- schools.

At present , Sarawak does provide qual ity pre- school education but not every parent could afford the tuition fees, he pointed out.

“Once the Sarawak government has put quality pre- schools in place, not only would children be receiving quality education, but the financial burden of parents might also be reduced.”

Separately, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government would reconstruct the Satok Suspension Bridge – known local ly as ‘Jambatan Gantung’ – in the next two years, as be believed that the structure, upon its completion, could play a part in reviving the area. Abang Johari’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang and STAR Alumni Association president Dato Dr Malike Mahli were also present.
