DBKU continues collaboration to plant 1,000 trees annually
KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will continue to work with the community to carry out tree planting activities to achieve its target of planting 1,000 trees a year.
Its mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said the council has organised various tree planting programmes with the community as well as private and government agencies such as Arbor Day, an annual activity of DBKU.
Apart from that, DBKU also practises a simple yet effective method to maintain the greenery in the city of Kuching by planting three trees for every tree felled.
“It is my hope that organising tree planting activities would serve as the driving force to carry out more environmentallyfriendly activities in the future.
“Trees not only provide cool and comfortable shade but also stabilise the temperature of our environment, thereby contributing towards efforts in combating climate change,” he said at Pledge & Plant A Tree ProgrammeheldatPusatPengajian Al- Quran Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub here on Saturday.
Four Gaharu and 150 Golden Panda tree saplings were planted during the event.
Abdul Wahap noted that the tree planting programme green up the area around the centre in line with DBKU’s Clean, Beautiful and Safe (CBS) Enhancement Plan.
“Such programmes also strengthen links between departments and agencies, stress the importance of biodiversity and show how human actions affect the environment,” he added.
The annual programme which started in 2008 is organised by Malaysian Instutute of Planners ( MIP) in conjunction with National Planning Festival Month and World Town Day Celebration every November.
MIP Sarawak and Sabah Chapter chairman Victor Lai said this year’s programme marks the first collaboration between MIP and local authorities around the country such as DBKU, Petaling Jaya City Council, Kuantan Municipal Council, Melaka Historic City Council, Iskandar Puteri City Council andm Taiping Municipal Council.
“The Pledge & Plant A Tree Programme aims to bring communities and individuals together to green our cities, reduce carbon emission, improve comfort in urban areas and create healthy, livable cities,” he said, adding that the programme was simultaneously carried out in Petaling Jaya, Kuantan, Melaka, Iskandar Puteri and Taiping.
During the event, MIP also contributed RM5,000 to DBKU, Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board, Hope Place, Kuching Autistic Association and Land and Survey Department’s Sports and Recreational Club.
