Kedah Sultan: Use knowledge as blessing, not merely for money
SINTOK: The Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim, Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah yesterday advised graduates from Universiti Utara Malaysia ( UUM) to make knowledge a blessing instead of merely for seeking money.
In this regard, Sultan Sallehuddin, who is also the UUM Chancellor, also hoped that the graduates would be able to apply knowledge and experience gained in the interest of the people.
“Indeed, university education is not about merely getting the qualification for employment but it is a foundation to prepare for a perfect life in the future.
“The advice of Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, was ‘Be a creative person. Become an entrepreneur’.
“This expression should be wisely pondered for its implicit meaning. I hope the graduates in this noble hall can take inspiration from these words of wisdom to continue their life in a more successful, creative and productive way that they can become job-makers and not just job seekers,” he said.
He said this at the proclamation ceremony of the Sultan Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin BadlishahSultanSallehuddinasthe new UUM Pro-Chancellor and the opening of UUM’s 31th convocation ceremony here yesterday. The ceremony was declared open by Sultan Sallehuddin.
In addition, Sultan Sallehuddin also said the graduates should not be too comfortable and must be prepared physically, mentally and spiritually to face the challenges ahead.
Meanwhile, Sultan Sallehuddin said the graduates and all members of society were responsible for mobilising the concept of a caring society seriously as various negative symptoms were becoming increasingly rampant among the communities.
At the event, Sultan Sallehuddin also conferred a Doctor of Philosophy ( Logistics Management) Honorary Degree to the managing director and chief executive director of PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd, Datuk Michael Tio.
A total of 6,156 graduates received their scrolls at the convocation. — Bernama
