TAWAU: A drug trafficking syndicate here has been crippled with the arrest of four local men and seizure of 104.3kg of Syabu worth RM5.2 million.

Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said two raids were conducted on Nov 9 between 12.30pm and 1.45pm – the first on a vehicle with three men inside parked at Jalan Haji Karim.

He said substance believed to be Syabu was found in the car and one of the suspects had a past drugrelated record.

“The second raid was at Jalan Bunga Raya off Jalan Masjid where another suspect, who is a friend of the three men, was detained.

“The four men are from Kuala Lumpur and Johor, aged 31 to 39 years old. Police also seized Malaysian and Singaporean currencies worth RM2,000,” he said in a press conference here yesterday.

According to Mohmad, the drugs – sealed in tea packets – were meant for the local and neighbouring market, adding that police are still investigating the modus operandi of the syndicate to determine how the drugs were brought in.

“Based on 0.2 grammes per addict per day, the (seized) drugs can supply 521,705 addicts for six months,” he added.

The suspects will be remanded until Nov 16 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Meanwhile, he said from January to November this year, the national statistics on drugrelated arrests totaled 143,430 people, comprising 22,660 for supplying, 54,367 for possession and 66,403 people for testing positive for drugs.
