Mong launches first Sino-Dayak Association branch in Sri Aman
SRI AMAN: Sarawak SinoDayak Association has officially launched its first branch — Sri Aman with a dinner here on Saturday night.
Bukit Begunan assemblyman Datuk Mong Dagang officiated at the event which was also attended by DAP Sri Aman branch chairman Leon Jimat Donald and local UPP strongman Datuk Dr Ngu Piew Seng.
The association’s president Sebastian Bong said Sri Aman branch is the only registered branch while the others are still at pro-tem level.
He explained that Sino-Dayaks are born out of inter-marriage between the Chinese and Dayaks.
“Intermarriage is the catalyst of the country’s unity. Every single Sino- Dayak should be proud of that. However, the majority of the Sino-Dayaks are living below the poverty level. The association hopes to work out some plans with the support of the government to improve the economy of the people,” he said.
He was happy that in the small town of Sri Aman, leaders and representatives from three political parties United People’s Party ( UPP), DAP and Parti Rakyat Sarawak were present at the dinner to show their support.
Meanwhile, Mong said the association is proof of unity in Sarawak where all races mingle and interact freely.
“We also hope that Sino-Dayaks can actively contribute towards nation building and for the association to be a platform to get Sino-Dayaks more organised,” he said.
The dinner also saw presence of association’s representatives from Engkilili, Lubuk Antu, Betong, Meradong, Serian and Kuching.
