Consistent hard work pays off for SMK Baru Miri
MIRI: SMK Baru Miri reaped the rewards of its year-long efforts when it placed second in the national-level Hygiene, Health and Safety (3K) Awards 2018, held in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 31.
Its senior assistant of student affairs Amanda Chong said the success was a collaborative effort involving various parties since the beginning of the school year, and comes after SMK Baru won at the division- and state-level of the competition.
“Everyone worked hard since January this year to ensure SMK Baru Miri was capable of winning the competition.
“After winning at state-level, our school was nominated for the national-level competition where the top three schools were announced in early October.

Ministry and Dutch Lady on Oct 23 for two weeks through the 3K aspects,” she said in a press conference here yesterday.
The 3K award is an annual national school awards programme organised by Dutch Lady Malaysia together with the Education Ministry, to educate and recognise efforts in attaining better hygiene, health and safety among the schools in Malaysia.
In the competition, SMK Baru Miri came in second behind SMK Convent Alor Setar, Kedah and ahead of SMK Paya Rumput, Melaka.
It was the school’s second time participating in the competition whereby in 2016, it placed second at state-level.
On the criteria and marking system for the competition, Chong said it covered all aspects of hygiene, health and safety of the school.
“It is a tedious process but nonetheless, we are thankful with the effort shown by everybody involved directly and indirectly throughout the year, including Miri City Council, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force Miri, the police and also the Construction Industry Development Board,” she said.
Adding on, Chong said SMK Baru Miri’s win in the statelevel Dengue Patrol Programme also contributed to its win in the 3K competition. The school is currently in the running for the national-level Dengue Patrol Programme – the results of which will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, principal Jerrah Pandin said even though the school did not emerge as the national 3K champion, placing second was still a major achievement in the school’s 29-year history, and congratulated all parties involved for their efforts.
“This success belongs to everyone and I hope it would be a motivation and an inspiration to all not to give up and to always try hard. I applaud everyone’s commitment for this success,” she said.
