Monolita wins but Dream Catcher II is champion pony

- By Scoop

KUCHING: Monolita won the 1000M Class 1 event in Race Five on Sunday but Dream Catcher II has the Champion Pony title tucked safely in the saddlebag as the season drew to a close after an eventful day of racing.

The Beraya Stable’s five-yearold held off a strong bid from the closest title contender Wind Chaser ( Mazlan Bujang) to win by three-quarter length but could not close the gap on Dream Catcher II with two wins short.

Suaji ( Mahrub Wahab) finished a distant third.

Dream Catcher II finished fourth but a four- win cushion going into the race gave the fiveyearold a virtually safe passage to the title.

Stablemate Wind Chaser was the only runner with a realistic chance of reserving the order and a win on Sunday would have put the eight-year- old on level terms with Dream Catcher II – four wins each – and also given him the title for having more second placings.

But Wind Chaser missed out narrowly and had to settle for the runner-up spot.

Monolita, trained by Tamzizi Putit, paid RM11.

Three runners completed the final meeting of the year with a double.

Junior Champ ( Mazlan Bujang) followed up on his success on the First Day with another win in Race One (Class IV – 1000M), beating Chenlimah (Amirzull Othman) by half-length with Dragon Master (Jasmi Kamar) a long third.

The winner, owned by Sara Stable and trained by Lee Moi Fong, paid RM10.

Cherokee ( Roslan Bujang) scored a second straight win in Race 3 (Class III --1000M).

The six-year- old, fresh from a spell, went to the finishing line two lengths clear of Bintang Kilong (Jasmi Kamar) with Sofia’s Pet third, 1 ½ lengths further back.

The winner, owned by W’s Stable and trained by Edmund Sim, paid RM7.

My Moon (Jasmi Kamar) also doubled up in Race Four ( Class II – 1000M).

The three-year-old cruised home by a distance from Geronimo (Jasmi Kamar) with Storm Raider third, five lengths back.

The winner, owned by Beraya Stable and trained by Tamizi Putit, paid RM7.

Race Two (Class 4 – 1000M) was declared void due to a false start.

One of the runners took off, dragging most of the field with him, before the starter gave the order to start.

A restart was intended but one of the runners pulled up lame, leaving a field of only four runners. The Racing Stewards decided to cancel the race due to insufficient acceptors. All bets were refunded. The going was yielding. In the history of local racing, there had been two other false starts at the old Padungan racecourse in the late 1950’s, according a racing old timer.

He said as far as he could recall, in the first false start, a pony called Puca Architect, ridden by Asing, completed a one-mile race, only for it to be declared a false start.

The race was re-run and Puca Architect went on to win the second time around.

In the other false start, the old timer remembers, a pony called Nasib Saya, with Samsuddin Kawi astride, won a race over four furlongs but a new race was ordered due to a false start. Nasib Saya also went on to win the rerun.

After the starting gate was introduced, there have been no more incidences of false starts on record. Sara Stable’s 2 JUNIOR CHAMP 4 CHENLIMAH 5 DRAGON MASTER 1 Good Fortune Also ran: 3 Precious Moment Won by Time Tote Forecast Tote Forecast 3 Trainer
