Broaden your knowledge, rep tells Orang Ulu women
MIRI: Orang Ulu women must broaden their minds and knowledge in order to succeed in entrepreneurship.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau gave this advice when officiating at the Women Empowerment Seminar organised by Doh Kayan ( Kayan Women’s) Association Telang Usan ( DKTU) and the association’s second anniversary at a leading hotel here recently.
He told the women entrepreneurs that they need to cast aside their ‘wait and see’ attitude if they wish to become more successful.
Although the Orang Ulu community was estimated to constitute only seven per cent of Sarawak’s population of 2.7 million, he said their small number should not be an obstacle for them to progress in business.
“If there is a will, there is a way. I know many Orang Ulu women are successful in business and I hope such achievement will continue to improve in the future,” he said.
He advised Orang Ulu women, especially those in Telang Usan, to make full use of the association to identify business opportunities that they can take up.

in government-led development programmes, especially in Baram,” he said.
He added that DKTU plays an important role in helping members through skills courses as well as opportunities to be involved in development in the state.
On the DKTU anniversary, Dennis said it was a positive development, and he hoped women entrepreneurs in Telang Usan would continue to grow their business.
At the event, Dennis presented a RM15,000 cheque to DKTU. Earlier, DKTU chairwoman and Kayan paramount chief Temenggong Elizabeth Deng said many Orang Ulu women entrepreneurs were as able as their male counterparts to strengthen their business, though only through small and medium industries.
“I would like to urge DKTU members to fully utilise digital technology to further develop entrepreneurship. Women entrepreneurs need to be aware of digital technology and the use of social media like WhatsApp and Facebook,” she urged.
“Such technology not only saves time, energy and money, but can aid in doubling of profits and growing their businesses,” she added.
