Berthed express boat goes up in flames, no injuries

SIBU: An express boat berthed at a pontoon near Sibu Express Boat Terminal here was destroyed after it caught fire early yesterday.

The incident happened at 6.40am and caused a second express boat to sustain light damage, but did not result in injuries.

Sarawak Rivers Board ( SRB) Sibu assistant controller ( Region II) Hatta Morshidi said the incident was the first to occur at the terminal.

“Based on the preliminar­y report from our enforcemen­t team, the fire broke out at the pontoon near Sibu Express Boat Terminal around 6.40am. SRB alerted the boat owner to have the burning boat towed away.

“The affected boat was 100 per cent damaged, but is still floating. Everything inside was razed,” he said when met at the scene, adding the second boat sustained about 10 per cent in damages.

According to Hatta, there were no passengers onboard any of the express boats berthed at the terminal at the time of the incident.

He said the two affected boats are currently berthed at Burung Apu Wharf in Khoo Peng Loong Road, with the cause of the fire still being ascertaine­d.
