Man jailed, fined for stealing spandex roof

MIRI: A magistrate’s court here jailed a man for a month yesterday after he pleaded guilty to stealing a spandex roof belonging to a senior citizen.

Senior assistant registrar Md Syafique Md Hilmie passed the sentence on Christophe­r Chamat, 31, and also fined him RM500 in default two weeks’ imprisonme­nt.

The accused, from Tudan Phase 1, was accused of stealing a spandex roof worth RM163 from a 71-year- old man on Oct 30 at a lot along Jalan Kiambang C in Tudan.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine upon conviction.

In mitigation, Christophe­r told the court that it was his first offence and that he thought the house where he took the roof was unoccupied.

The court ordered the sentence to start from the day of his arrest on Nov 7.
