MCA needs consensus of component parties for BN’s dissolution, says Ahmad Zahid

-

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has no right to call for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional ( BN), as such a decision needs the consensus of all component parties, said BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

On Sunday, during MCA’s 65th general assembly, a resolution was unanimously passed to authorise the Central Committee to initiate the process (seeking to dissolve BN) to form a new alliance.

“Although it is a proposal, they should know that any decision made by BN is a consensus-based decision,” said Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, to reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

For the 14th General Election, on May 9, BN had 13 component parties and is now left with only four parties, namely Umno, MCA, MIC and myPPP after BN suffered a heavy defeat for the first time in 61 years since the country achieved independence in 1957.

Ahmad Zahid, however, said BN respected MCA’s decision and advised the party to know their position in Parliament if they wished to remain relevant in the country’s political landscape.

MCA has only one representative in the Dewan Rakyat, the party president, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong as Member of Parliament for Ayer Hitam. Following the party’s stand, Ahmad Zahid said BN would hold talks with other component parties in the coalition on MCA’s resolution to dissolve the BN coalition established in 1973. — Bernama
