Take extra safety measures when going out of town, house owners advised

MIRI: House owners here have been reminded to take extra security measures for their houses to prevent break-ins considerin­g now is not only the school holidays but also festive season as well.

“As criminal cases particular­ly those related to housebreak­ing would usually see a slight increase during this time, house owners need to ensure that their properties are adequately secured especially if they are going to be out of town,” said Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting in a press statement here yesterday.

He advised house owners to ensure all entry points in the house such as doors, windows and gates are locked properly before leaving for long vacation,

“Houses left empty while their owners are travelling are tempting targets for criminals.

“Thus, it is important for house owners to follow basic safety and preventive measures which can help keep their home safe from power surges, housebreak­ing and in many other situations while they are away,” Ting added in the statement.

He also pointed out that it is also important for house owners to unplug all electrical appliances in the house in case of power surges to avoid unwanted incident and losses.

“Besides asking a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on our house while we’re away on vacation, it is advisable to notify the nearest police station too.”
