Police to close six roads due to Icerd rally

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will close six roads in the capital in conjunction with the ‘ thanksgiving’ rally to celebrate the non-ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination ( Icerd) from 6 am tomorrow.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said this was to give space for the rally participants to gather in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad building in Jalan Raja as well as to avoid traffic congestion.

The affected roads are Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin (before the tunnel), Leboh Pasar, Jalan Tun Perak (starting from the Masjid Jamek LRT station), Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (near Sogo), Jalan Raja Laut (near Summit Hotel) and the Dato’ Onn roundabout (near Bank Negara).

“We advise those attending the rally to use public transport to avoid congestion and not to park their vehicles on road shoulders as this would disrupt traffic flow,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters here yesterday.

According to him, those who break rules, violate the law and do not obey instructions from the authorities will have their vehicles towed or be issued with summonses.

He also advised rally participants to comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, not spark provocation as well as not make viral on social media speculations which could jeopardise public order.

“Participants are also advised not to bring any dangerous weapons, not to recruit or bring children and to obey the instructions of police personnel on duty,” said Mazlan.

He assured that there would be sufficient police personnel on duty to ensure public safety and order and to make sure there would be no untoward incidents before, during or after the rally.

Meanwhile, he said police would monitor the parade from the Federal Territory Mosque, involving silat associations, to hand over a memorandum on ICERD at Gate 3 of the Istana Negara between 10am and 12 noon tomorrow.
