China’s Jia Hao offers his US scholarshi­ps to S’wak golfer Mirabel

SHAH ALAM: China’s Lin Jia Hao has shown a great act of sporting spirit at the recent 13th AmBank SportExcel Internatio­nal Junior Golf Championsh­ips at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.

Jia Hao won the boys’ category A (age 15-18) after firing one-under 71 in the final round on Thursday, which gave him a two- day total of three- under 141 and secured him a one-year scholarshi­p from renowned Hills Golf Academy in the United States.

Ins tead of g rabbing the opportunit­y, Jia Hao offered the scholarshi­p to Malaysia’s Mirabel Ting Ern Hui, the winner of the girls’ category B (age 13-14) with a two- day total of three-under 141, as he wanted her to have a chance at honing her skills abroad.

“It was a hard-fought tournament and I didn’t expect to win. I’m so happy with my achievemen­t,” said the Sarawak Sukma golfer, who thanked Jia Hao for his kind gesture.

“I hope to keep the momentum going for my upcoming tournament,” she added.

There was double joy for China when they also emerged victorious in the girls’ category A through Zhang Yue.

The overnight leader captured the title with a two- day score of one- over 145 – two shots ahead of Malaysia’s Winnie Ng Yu Xuan.

To add icing on the cake, China also won the Inter- Country Team event to take home the Tunku Imran Trophy.

All the prizes were presented by AmBank Group Corporate Communicat­ions and Marketing executive vice- president Syed Anuar Syed Ali.

A total of 146 players from eight countries took part in the tournament, which was divided into six categories – Boys’ and Girls’ A ( aged 15-18), Boys’ and Girls’ B (13-14) and Boys’ and Girls’ C (10-12).

The eight countries were India, Thai land, Australia, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea and hosts Malaysia.
