Lorry plows into cars, wall while flee­ing ac­ci­dent

KUCHING: A lorry driver was as­saulted yes­ter­day by mem­bers of the pub­lic af­ter he rammed into two parked ve­hi­cles while at­tempt­ing to flee an ear­lier road ac­ci­dent.

The in­ci­dent is said to have be­gun when the 10-tonne lorry rear-ended a com­pact car, caus­ing the car to strike an­other ve­hi­cle in front of it.

In­stead of stop­ping, how­ever, the lorry driver al­legedly sideswiped the com­pact car and sped off, re­sult­ing in the fum­ing com­pact car driver giv­ing chase.

The pur­suit ended about 200 me­tres away at Jalan Batu Perak, Kam­pung Stakan Me­layu when the lorry went out of con­trol and plowed into two cars parked along the side of the road, be­fore crash­ing into the perime­ter wall of a nearby house.

An­gry on­look­ers then al­legedly pulled the lorry driver out of the heavy ve­hi­cle and beat him up.

Mean­while, Fire and Res­cue Depart­ment (Bomba) per­son­nel were dis­patched to the scene fol­low­ing a dis­tress call at 3.20pm.

Ac­cord­ing to a Bomba spokesper­son, fire­fight­ers ar­rived at the scene to dis­cover the lorry driver had sus­tained in­juries from the al­leged beat­ing, and pro­vided first-aid treat­ment be­fore hand­ing him over to the po­lice for fur­ther ac­tion.

Passers-by take a closer look at the two cars which the lorry plowed into prior to crash­ing into the perime­ter wall.
