S’wak golf prodigy adds another international title
KUCHING: Local sensation Mirabel Ting Ern Hui continued to make waves in the international golf scene when she was crowned the overall champion at the 13th AmBank Group- Sportexcel Internat ional Junior Gol f Championship at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam, Selangor from Dec 4 to 6.
Playing in the Girls Category B ( 13-14 years), the 13-year old lass from Miri carded a two- day gross total of three-under 141 ( 69, 72) to beat another Malaysian Maisarah Hezri (149) and China’s Pan Jiehong (152).
Mirabel also lifted the overall champion trophy for returning the best score in the girls competition.
Coming along with the victory was a one-year scholarship from Hills Golf Academy, Australia to study at Hills International College in Brisbane, Queensland.
Mirabel was also the Girls overall champion in the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup International Junior Open at Damai Golf and Country Club from Nov 27 to 29.
Meanwhile, her elder brother Malcolm Ting Siong Hung, who won the recent Damai Masters Amateur Golf Championship at DGCC, also produced an impressive performance by becoming the best Malaysian finisher among the boys.
He carded a two- day gross total of four- over 148 to finish in fifth place behind the champion Lin Jia Hao of China (141) and three other golfers from Thailand.
A total of 62 gol fers from Malaysia and 86 golfers from Thailand, India, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia and Indonesia competed in the tournament which was cut short to two days due to heavy rain on the third day.
The Ting siblings will next compete in the 14th KGM Junior Amateur Open Golf Championship vying for the Datuk Sebastian Ting Challenge Trophy at Kelab Golf Miri from Dec 12 to 13 and the inaugural Gavin Green Junior Amateur Open in Kuala Lumpur from Dec 18 to 20.
