Road Transport Act Amendment Bill tabled for first reading

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Siew Fook has tabled the Road Transport Act (Amendment) Bill 2018 for first reading in Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

He clarified that the bill, among others, would empower city councils to set up their own traffic warden teams to help traffic policemen and Road Transport Department ( RTD) by conducting patrols and looking after traffic.

Loke also said the new amendments in the bill would also improve the process of cancelling vehicle registrations to facilitate local authorities to write off abandoned vehicles.

‘’Currently, local authorities encounter problems to write off abandoned vehicles in their areas because most of the vehicles still have registrations.

So, the amendments will help the local authorities in their work to write off abandoned vehicles,’’ he said when met at the Parliament lobby. Meanwhile, Loke said under the amendments, the minister was also authorised to decide on the fee on the use of tinted glass by vehicles as, prior to this, there was no provision for the government to impose a charge or fee on tinted glasses.

‘’ Prior to this, only the minister is given the power to give exemption to any individual through a letter,’’ he said.

The bill would not involve additional expenses for the government.
