Rain triggered collapse at KM49 Bintulu-Tatau Road

-

BINTULU: Heavy downpour on Monday afternoon resulted in the collapse of a section at KM49 Bintulu-Tatau Road.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat spokesman Major Ismail Mahedin said a landslide was initially reported to have occurred on the road shoulder around 4.40pm.

He said at 4.45pm, one lane was still accessible to vehicles, but that the road was totally cut off and closed to traffic at 6pm.

Ismail said a temporary road diversion built by the Pan Borneo Highway contractor has been opened to ease the traffic flow in the area under the supervision of the police and Lebuhraya Borneo Utara’s safety team since 8.30pm on Monday.

An investigation team from the Public Works Department (JKR) has also been deployed to the location to identify the cause of the landslide.

Road users have been asked to use alternative coastal route of Selangau Matading-Balingian-Kuala Balingian-Kuala Serupai-Kuala Tatau- Jepak to get to their destinations.
