Bomba D-G: Major industrial estates will one day have own fire stations

-

BINTULU: Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) directorgeneral Datuk Mohammad Hamdan Wahid foresees those from the corporate sector constructing special fire stations in major heavy industrial estates here.

He says the idea is significant as such fire stations can provide even better fire safety protection, particularly for high- risk buildings.

“As mentioned by the chief executive officer of MLNG ( Pau Kiew Huai) last night, they also hope to one day join forces to build a special fire station to take care of the high- risk areas.

“The special fire station will be staffed by their own manpower and will be a permanent fixture alongside existing fire stations under the federal government,” he told reporters during a working visit to Bintulu fire station on Monday.

Earlier, Mohammad Hamdan witnessed the official handing over of the Samalaju fire station complex by the Public Works Department ( JKR) Sarawak to Bomba Sarawak.

In view that Samalaju Industrial Park houses several large companies with high- tech plants and assets worth over RM40 billion, he assured that the capacities and capability of the Samalaju fire station will be upgraded in stages based on the area’s needs.

Giving an example, he said Bintulu fire station has its own special teams such as the Water Rescue Unit ( PPDA), Emergency Medical Rescue Services ( EMRS) and Hazardous Materials ( Hazmat) team in light of the high- risk operations of big companies in the Kidurong industrial area, including Samalaju.

“Hazmat is an active team here due to the presence of industries and processing factories of high investment value which also involve particular hazardous materials,” he said.

Mohammad Hamdan believed that with sufficient training and high competency among Bomba personnel, coupled with greater understanding and engagement with industrial players here, local firefighters have the capability to deal with any kind of incident.
