-

MIRI: Fifty- four participants representing 18 cooperatives from here, Kuching, Serian, Sibu, Bintulu, Kapit and Belaga took part in a cake-making course conducted at Dynasty Hotel recently.

Run by the Cooperative College of Malaysia ( CCM), the two- day programme was conducted by facilitator Jane Willie, who has 18 years of experience as a lecturer at SATT College and over six years in the baking industry – and amidst her hectic schedule, she also managed to obtain Diploma in Bakery and Pastry.

“Being one of the most popular activities among women and also men, it ( baking) is easy but at the same time, it can be a challenge.

“The recipes that are easily accessed via Internet may look easy, but the skills and techniques, as well as the ingredients and methods used, like controlling the baking temperature, could make a huge difference between a success and a failure,” Jane explained to the participants.

The CCM – previously known as Maktab Kerjasama Malaysia – is the only cooperative training centre in the country.

Upon its establishment in 1956, the college was run under the Colonial and Development Fund, with the government giving contributions to encourage its development.

After that, CCM came to be recognised as a statutory body under the Cooperative College ( Incorporation) Act 1968, as approved by the Parliament on Sept 11, 1968.

Since then, it has been placed under several ministries including the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Land and Cooperative Development.

In 2009, CCM was placed under the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs ( KPDNKK).

It is learnt that the college plans to open up more courses for next year.
