‘Crazy’ star Constance Wu in talks for new rom-com

LOS ANGELES: Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu is in talks to join Sony’s Screen Gems’ untitled romantic comedy, with Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman producing.

GLOW actress Kimmy Gatewood is making her feature directoria­l debut on the project. She will be directing from a Savion Einstein script about a woman who becomes pregnant with two babies from two different men. Alison Small from Brownstone will executive produce.

Constance made her breakthrou­gh in ABC’s sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat,” in which she portrays the pragmatic wife to Randall Park’s character and the mother of three children. The fifth season began airing in October.

Constance portrayed the central character Rachel Chu in Crazy Rich Asians opposite Henry Golding and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh. The movie has grossed US$ 237 million worldwide since its release in August. For her role, Constance has received a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination.

Crazy Rich Asians is based on the first novel in Kevin Kwan’s Singapore- set trilogy, followed by “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems.” Warner

Bros., Color Force and Ivanhoe are developing the two sequels with Wu and Golding expected to reprise their roles.

Sony had no comment about the news.

In the wake of Constance’s Golden Globes nomination, many Asian-American actors had tweeted their excitement.

Crazy Rich Asians itself had been nominated for best picture (musical or comedy). Director Jon M. Chu congratula­ted everyone who worked on the film, tweeting: “Proud seems too small of a word now.”

Korean- Canadian actress Sandra Oh also won a Golden Globes nomination for best performanc­e by an actress in a television drama series for her role in Killing Eve.

Sandra is also making history as the first Asian women to host the Golden Globes.
