Local author promotes Diary of a Rich Kid novel in Johor international school

KUCHING: Author Malcolm Mejin recently promoted his latest novel Diary of a Rich Kid at REAL International School Johor Bahru as part of his ongoing book tour.

Having just completed his recent book- signing events here, Malcolm headed across the South China Sea to Peninsular Malaysia for his book tour.

Some fans have compared Diary of a Rich Kid to popular novels in the market such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Crazy Rich Asians, but realise upon finishing reading the book that Diary of a Rich Kid is in a league of its own.

Facebook user Shahril Fifiq, in recommending the book, said: “When I bought the book, I thought I was buying a similar book to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. But actually it was far more than that as Diary of a Rich Kid was more interesting, especially the part where they went to the Bahamas.

“I would recommend all of you to read this book,” he said.

Malcolm, meanwhile, said he has never read Diary of a Wimpy Kid before, and that Diary of a Rich Kid is something completely different in that it is based on his lavish experience.

“I kind of like writing novels in diary form. Back in 2012, I had a debut novel called Cool Diary, which is a diary novel.

“I’ve also kept journals since I was a little boy, so it’s only natural for me to write something with a ‘diary’ feel to it,” he said.

According to the Kuching author, he had initially wanted to name his latest novel Rich Kid Diary.

“I realised that it sound kind of awkward for me personally, so I decided to rename it to Diary of a Rich Kid.”

He added that people have been making comparisons of his book to the popular hit novel Crazy Rich Asians, mostly in a good, humorous way.

“When I was writing Diary of a Rich Kid, I had never heard of Crazy Rich Asians. I just wrote the novel based on my experience. So to hear people comparing my novel to those popular ones is kind of an honour,” he said.

Malcolm revealed that he received positive comments on his novel when meeting fans during his book tour.

“Some have urged me to write a sequel. I’m kind of excited about it and I can’t wait.” Malcolm has also been giving motivational talks to students at local schools, to inspire them to fulfil their passion.
