Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia celebrates diversity in cultural fest

-

KUCHING: The Cultural Festival 2018 recently held by Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) transformed its campus into a global wonderland.

The festival was participated by members of the university’s clubs and societies who represented the different countries of the world, and was attended by a crowd of students from the Medical and Biomedical Sciences faculty, according to a NUMed press statement yesterday.

Organised by the university’s Student Association, the festival aimed to cultivate greater cultural diversity at NUMed and foster closer collaboration and cooperation among students.

“There is a lot going on here in NUMed. Our student body is represented by a diverse population from all over the globe such as from Dubai, Singapore, Maldives, Egypt, New Zealand and more,” said Student Association president Dania Bassim in the statement.

Dania, who is a secondyear biomedical student of the university, added that with such a vast range of nationalities and cultures at the university, the festival acted as a platform to showcase the cultures of their peers to everyone.

“We wanted to include as many of the world’s cultures as possible through this event,” said Dania.

Also speaking was Student Association vice- president Aisswarya Vasu, a second-year medical student, who said she was pleasantly surprised by the festival’s success.

“It was interesting to witness the harmony amidst the diversity. The interaction between the lecturers and students from all three of our medical courses, who hail from different backgrounds, was heartwarming,” said Aisswarya.

The festival started a month ago with a donation collection for the National Cancer Council Malaysia which exceeded RM1,000, as well as an ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’.
