Family outing turns tragic after boy, 6, drowns in pool

KUCHING: A six-year- old boy drowned in a swimming pool during a family holiday at a resort in Sematan yesterday.

Lundu police chief DSP Wong Chee Keong said the tragedy was discovered around noon when an elder sibling spotted the victim floating in the water and informed their parents.

“The victim, the youngest of six, was rushed to the Sematan health clinic where efforts to resuscitat­e him failed. The body was sent to Lundu Hospital, with the case classified as sudden death pending the result of a post-mortem,” said Wong.

It is learned the family hail from Kampung Tabuan Melayu here.

Separately, a couple was injured after their van was involved in a collision with a car in Stutong Baru, here on Saturday.

The Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) in a statement said its personnel from the Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations were deployed to the scene following a distress call at 8.46pm.

“The van driver and his wife sustained light injuries. However, the wife, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, needed to be extricated from by fi remen,” said the statement, adding both were given fi rst aid at the scene prior to being sent to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.

The car driver was not hurt in the incident.
