MIRI: The finalists of Miss Grand Miri 2018 proved that they are more than just pretty faces by doing their part for the local community.

All 31 contestants of the beauty pageant did not only come to the ‘ Community Blood Donation Drive’ at Boulevard Shopping Complex here yesterday to support the cause but register as donors.

Event organising chairman Councillor Karambir Singh, who represented the Blood Donor Recruitment Committee of the Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) Miri District, commended the girls for their self less contribution.

He also praised all those who registered, saying that the programme would not be possible without their support.

“Initially, we expected a collection of 80 pints.

“However, 139 blood donors registered for the campaign and from that number, 110 were successful donors. In total, we collected 110 pints of blood.

“It is worth mentioning that all 31 finalists of Miss Grand Miri 2018 are not only among the successful donors, but all of them are also first-time donors,” said Karambir.

The drive was a joint effort by the Dayak Association Miri, Miri Indian Association, Persatuan Berawan Sarawak, Moving Communities, Dayak Bidayuh National Association ( DBNA) Miri Branch, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu ( PBB) Women – Mulu Branch, Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) Women – Piasau Branch, Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak ( SIDS) and ALP Hospital Miri.

According to Karambir, the objective of the drive was to replenish the blood stock at Miri Hospital ahead of the Christmas celebration and the year- end holiday.

“We are very pleased that so many organisations have come forward to help,” he added.

Karambir also expressed special thanks to the event’s coorganisers – Mulu PBB Women chairwoman Datin Catherine Awing who represented Persatuan Berawan Sarawak, Councillor Mathew Benson who represented Dayak Association Miri, Parveen Kaur ( Miri Indian Association), Francis Menden Dawit ( DBNA Miri), Loretta Herbet Madang ( Moving Communities), Julie Ting Chek Ho ( Piasau SUPP Women), and Benika Angi ( SIDS).
