Rep urges Sesco to check old power lines and wirings

KUCHING: Syarikat Sesco Berhad has been urged to check power lines and wirings in longhouses which are supplied with electricity for more than 25 years.

Democratic Action Party ( DAP) Sri Aman chairman Leon Jimat Donald said Sesco could do this as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility ( CSR) initiatives.

According to Leon, there are concerns that electrical issues could have caused the fi re at Rumah Sambau Nanga Entulang, Sri Aman recently, which killed one elderly woman and caused many others to be homeless.

“There had been complaints and calls from the longhouse dwellers to Sesco about sparks that occurred from the wirings in the longhouse before this, but no checks were done. As part of their CSR, I wish to ask Sesco to check all power lines and wirings in longhouses which were supplied with electricity for more than 25 years.

“Probably wear and tear (to the power lines and wirings) could have been a cause for the disaster,” Leon said.

Meanwhile, Leon on behalf of DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, handed over cash and aid amounting to RM27,000 to the victims of the fire at Rumah Sambau Nanga Entulan.

The funds were from the disaster fund of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister and Stampin MP.

The fi re, which struck last Wednesday, engulfed the longhouse leaving 49 villagers without a roof over their heads, and killing 67-year- old Yoan Mejat.
