BAU: One hundred and fifty seven people from 44 villages in Serumbu constituency attended a one day Community Emergency Response Team course held at Siniawan community hall yesterday.

The course would enable the villagers to respond to any emergency such as flood before the arrival of the relevant agencies like Police, Fire Department and the Civil Defence Force (APM).

Serumbu assemblyman Miro Simuh officiated at the closing ceremony.

He pointed out that such programme was good as the team could be deployed anytime in the event of natural disaster like fire

and flood.

“Preparation like this where the locals are involved is very important because they can assist the victims promptly before the arrival of the relevant agencies,” he pointed out.

Miro urged the participants to have self- confidence when faced with disaster to help the victims.

The role of CERT, he stressed should not be confined to helping flood or fire victims, but also to help with road accident.

“It is also very important that the CERT help victims of road accidents because our old Bau road has a very high rate of fatal accidents with four or more cases a year,” he said.

He hoped for more CERT squads to be set up across the state to assist the relevant agencies in helping victims of natural disasters.

He thanked Petronas for sponsoring the programme under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

Present was Kuching deputy Resident Tuah Suni.
