SMSK’s ‘Class of 1998’ alumni host inaugural reunion dinner

-

KUCHING: It was an occasion to remember for 54 former students of SM Sains Kuching (SMSK), who gathered at a hotel here recently for their inaugural reunion.

Many members of the ‘Class of 1998’ have not seen one another over the past 20 years.

Former head prefect Zulaihi Mohd Mantali, in his welcoming speech, stressed the importance of staying healthy and sustaining their good friendship sown two decades ago.

He was adamant about good health being the most significant prerequisite for future gatherings, urging his ‘Class of 1998’ mates to always maintain good health and keep fit.

Zulaihi, who is now working with Petronas, was also optimistic about the increase in the number of participants in subsequent gettogethers.

He appreciated the commitment and determination of the organising committee, for the success of the event.

“It’s never easy to gather former schoolmates for a get-together, as everyone is very engaged with their own lives and careers,” he said.

The reunion dinner was made lively by several activities that included singing evergreen and contemporary songs, cake- cutting, and also group performance of their school song – led by Norbaizura Mokhtar and Dayang Suhailawaty Awang Sulong.

The ‘Class of 1998’ was among the two pioneer student groups of SMSK, which opened in 1994.

They entered the residential school as Form 1 students. The other pioneer batch was the Form 4 group.

The Form 1 alumni also initiated a collection of donation, to be contributed to SMSK fund.

“We have taken so much from society, so now it’s time for us to give back. It’s a gesture of our sincere gratitude,” said SMSK alumnus Aliester Roy, who now teaches English at SMK Balai Ringin.

A lucky draw during the reunion, saw Neuchlos Jub walking away with the grand prize of a onenight stay at the hotel.

‘ SMSK Time Capsule’ was also initiated, with items such as autograph books, banners, Polaroid photos and short notes sealed inside a box.

The sealed box would be kept secretly – its whereabouts would only be known by the organising committee members.

This box would only be opened in 2031, when all 54 members of SMSK ‘Class of 1998’ reached the age of 50.

Other members of ‘Class of 1998’ who wish to keep in touch with the group can contact Aliester Roy at 016- 8600 327.
