PKR man highlights Kanowit folk’s need for a new water treatment plant

-

SIBU: A local Parti Keadilan Rakyat ( PKR) has highlighted the need for Kanowit District to have a new water treatment plant.

According to PKR Kanowit member Satu Anchom, the present facility is unable to accommodate the needs of the growing population in the district.

He called upon the government to allocate some funds towards this end.

“The problem worsens whenever there is heavy usage during peak periods,” he said when met during a recent visit to the 21- door Rumah Liang in Ulu Bawan, Kanowit.

Satu also pointed out Nanga Mam, Batu Luking, Peranan, Menalun, Ulu Dap, Baluh Ili, as well as longhouses and individual houses along the Majau/ Poi/ Ngungun Road as areas in Kanowit that are still without treated water supply.

He said the residents of these areas depend on rainwater besides water collected from swamps and rivers.

Separately, Satu said residents of Rumah Liang had approached and asked him to request for supply of water and electricity to their longhouse from the government.

He said they have been using generator sets for power supply, and rainwater and the nearby river for their daily water consumption.

“However, the river water is no longer safe because it has been polluted by an oil palm plantation nearby,” he claimed.

It is learnt that Rumah Liang is located 5km from the main Nibong Tada Road.
