MIRI: There will be no free service on waste disposal from next year and the registered property owners within Miri City Council ( MCC) jurisdiction will have to pay for the service.

Mayor Adam Yii said the council had decided to charge property owners for its waste management service at 0.5 per cent on top of the annual assessment rate by next year.

It is said that the council was facing high operational cost on waste management

The MCC h a s a l so b e en providi ng t he desludg i ng services free- of- charge since the past five years by absorbing the operational cost.

jurisdiction as of this year. From 2014 until now, such service has incurred high expenditure cost to the tune of RM22 million,” he told the press after chairing a full council meeting at their chamber yesterday.

Yii added that the structure of MCC Annual Rates had not been increased since 2004.

With the minimal increase in waste management service effective next year, he said the MCC was expected to collect an additional revenue of RM1.156 mil lion from the assessment rates, which would be used to defray part of its expenditure for such service.

Commenting on minor changes involving the chairmen of MCC’s three standing committees, he said the three councillors who headed the respective standing committees were unable to continue with the task due to other tight commitment.

He thanked them for their dedication during their tenure in the three committees - public health and licensing, tourism development and Local Agenda 21, and Community Development.

Cr Pui Yeong Fan will take over the chairmanship of public health and licensing committee from Cr Ariffin Mohamad.

Councillor Warziedea Ahmad is the new chairman of tourism development standing committee to replace Cr Ernest Goh, while Cr Karambir Singh takes the responsibility from Cr Aries Leong as the new chairman of local agenda 21 and community development.

Earlier, Yii announced that MCC had won two prestigious awards recently: Diamond Award of Smart Community Award 2018 for its community project entitled ‘ Say No To Plastic Bag Campaign’ on Nov 30 at UCSI Kuching; and Gold Award of Chief Minister’s Environmental Award 2017/2018( CMEA) on Dec 12 at Imperial Hotel Kuching.
