Some 1,000 people bid farewell to Law at funeral service

SIBU: About 1,000 family members, relatives and friends bade farewell to former minister of Science, Technology and Environmen­t Tan Sri Datuk Seri Law Hieng Ding during a funeral service at Xin Fu Yuan Methodist Church here yesterday.

Among those present were Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming, Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Meradong assemblyma­n Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, Sarikei MP Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, SUPP Youth Central chairman Michael Tiang, SUPP Bukit Assek branch chairman Dato Chieng Buong Toon, SUPP Pelawan branch chairman Clarence Ting, SUPP Nangka branch chairman Chua Beng Seng, SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong, and former Dudong chairman Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck.

Law passed away at 4.45am Christmas Day in Kuala Lumpur, at age 81.

His coffin arrived at Sibu Airport from Kuala Lumpur around 10 am ( Dec 25), and the funeral service started at noon yesterday before the former minister was laid to rest at a cemetery in Bukit Aup.

In his eulogy, Law’s eldest son Dr Eric described his father as the best father anyone could wish for.

“As someone very dedicated to his work, we did not have a lot of time with him. However, with whatever quality time we had and spent together, we will never forget. He is the best father anyone can wish for.”

He also described his father as a very generous man who always help anyone in need.

Law, the former Sarikei MP and SUPP deputy president held a federal minister’s post from 1990 to 2004.

He graduated from Nanyang University, Singapore in 1960 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting and Banking.

After returning to his hometown Sibu, he served in the district council from 1964 to 1981 as a councillor and chairman before becoming Sarikei MP the following year.

He continued to serve in the best interests of Sarawak and its people even after he stepped down as an MP in 2004.

Law leaves behind wife Puan Sri Ngui Soon Leng and his children Dr Eric, Dr Michael, and Dr Sabrina.
