Human resource executive loses RM8,300 to parcel scam
MIRI: A woman here is said to have lost RM8,300 to what appears to be a ‘parcel scam’.
The victim, 30, who is a human resource ( HR) executive, said she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be from a courier company in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Commercial Crime Investigation Department ( CCID) Sarawak chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah, the caller claimed that the victim had recently sent a parcel using the service of the said company – from an address in Alor Star, Kedah – to a recipient named ‘Sinom Phat Choi’ in Thailand.
“However, the caller said that the item was confiscated by the police and is being held at an IPD ( police headquarters) in Kedah, on suspicion that the item contains drugs, and that the executive is involved in cash smuggling activity,” he said in a press statement yesterday.
Mustafa Kamal added that the call was then transferred to a man, who introduced himself as one ‘Sgt Faizal Zakaria’ from Kedah police, who requested the executive to confirm her identification number.
The executive did as told, out of fear.
“The victim was then given an account number and was asked to transfer money into that account.”
Mustafa Kamal said she transferred RM2,500, RM800 and RM5,000 in separate transactions to the given account.
A police report was lodged after the HR executive realised that she had been scammed.
