New karate club eyeing character and talent
MIRI: Newly established Amura Lutong Karate Club here aspires to shape character and become a centre to unearth new talents in the sport.
The club, which was registered with the Sarawak State Sports Commissioner on Nov 13 last year, was launched last Sunday.
It sets out to encourage young people in the village and surrounding areas to spend their free time with beneficial sports activities as well as to attract young talents to venture into Karate-Do.
Club president Mohd Aznil Abdullah said they also aimed at shaping the young to be more confident and disciplined to enhance their character.
For a start, 31 club members aged nine to 27 participated in East Malaysia Zone Karate (EMZ) competition in Bintulu on Dec 1315. They obtained one gold, three silver and 19 bronze medals. The club will also join EMZ in Sabah at the end of this year.
“Young people are our future and this sport would be able to help discipline them and, hopefully, this club can produce many athletes who can represent Sarawak or Malaysia in the future,” Mohd Aznil said on Sunday.
The club seeks to collaborate with parents in encouraging their children to undergo regular training to develop their talents.
With 70 members so far, the club uses Kampung Pengkalan Lutong community hall as its official training ground. Siblings Awangku Muhamad Fauzi Awangku Tangah and Dayangku Nurdiyana Awangku Tangah are the main coaches.
Mohd Azni l also thanked Kampung Pengkalan Lutong village chief Ali Mat and other Village Development and Security Committees ( JKKK) for their support.
Sunday’s launching ceremony also saw ‘ kata’ performance by Muhammad Firdaus Yusop, Mohamad Syukri Suhaindi and Mohamad Farihin Mohd Aznil and ‘ kumite’ performance by Nurin Syukrina Salleh and Nur Shyaqirah Suhaindi.
Also present were club vice president Yusop Yassin, JKKK Pengkalan Lutong treasurer Deli Talib and parents.
