SIDS Sibu opens entry for 7th annual Pua Kumbu weaving competition
SIBU: The seventh- edition of ‘Sarawak Pua Kumbu Weaving Competition’ is now running and weavers from all over Sarawak are encouraged to join.
The organiser this year is Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Sibu.
Those interested to take part must submit their entries to the SIDS Sibu secretariat before or by this May 4.
Registration forms are available for download via www.sids- sibu. blogspot.com, or from the SIDS Sibu secretariat.
According to SIDS Sibu chairperson Angelyn Uchi Maseng, prizes worth RM20,000 are up for grabs.
“The objective of running this annual competition is to encourage the Dayak-Iban women to be more involved in Pua Kumbu weaving, towards upholding this handicraft as a legacy of the Dayak-Iban and also developing it for the market,” she told reporters here yesterday.
The competition is open to all Pua Kumbu weavers in Sarawak, regardless of age.
“In this competition, it is divided into two categories – Category 1 ( Cotton) and Category 2 ( Woven Skirt),” she said, adding that every entry must have the ‘SIDS SIBU 2019’ woven into any edge of the fabric.
“This requirement applies to both categories.”
The evaluation criteria are design/coatings which would constitute 40 per cent of total marking, colour and this must be all-natural ( 30 per cent), composit ion/ authent icity/ originality (15 per cent), and quality/weaving intricacy/ creativity (15 per cent).
“The results of the competition and the prize- giving ceremony will be announced in May. However, this is still under discussion – we will inform the date and location later,” Uchi added.

Uchi is the chairperson of the competition main committee, which also comprises secretary Claudia Dieo, Mundun as treasurer, and Priscilla as coordinator.
Members of the sub- committee are Monica Giri, Michelle Hildalyne, Magdalen Sinah, Magdaline Sigie, Catherine Kundau, Loryna Leman, Senorita Salleh, TR Catherine Tamoh and Regina Emu.
