Inaugural Parkinson’s Run, Warrior Walk on Feb 24
KUCHING: Kuching Parkinson’s Society (KPS) will hold Parkinson’s Run and Warrior Walk on Feb 24 at Saradise, Taman BDC here to raise public awareness and as its inaugural fundraiser.
Parkinson’s disease is a longterm degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system. The symptoms generally come on slowly over time. Early in the disease, the most obvious are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty in walking.
Although there are no official statistics, it is estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 Malaysians and over five million people worldwide are affected by the disease.
KPS was formed in January 2018 by a support group of people with Parkinson’s and their families with the aim of becoming the support platform of people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers, as well as to raise public awareness. A number of volunteers and supporters have also joined KPS.
KPS organises public talks, educational videos and posts on social media as well as regular talks and workshops for members and care-givers. The society also supports members with free rehabilitation and training for caregivers.
Besides raising awareness and raising fund, the society also aims to increase membership through Parkinson’s Run and Warrior Walk 2019.
There will be four categories to cater to all levels of runners and walkers with 10km run, 5km run as well as 1km Warrior Walk and Virtual Run.
Registration will close on Jan 24. Forms are available at RevRun, Green Heights Mall and Ultron, CityONE Megamall. Alternatively, register online at https://gritevent. com/parkinsonsrun/.
