Mirabel earns spot in M’sian team for Queen Sirikit Cup

KUCHING: Sarawak junior golf star Mirabel Ting Ern Hui kicked off the new season by securing one of the three slots in the Malaysian women’s team for the 41st Queen Sirikit Cup to be held at Glenelg Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia from Mar 6 to 8.

Thi s was con firmed by Mal aysi an Ladies Gol fers Associatio­n ( MALGA) executive director Dato Rabe’ahtul Aloya A Abbas.

The 13-year old prodigy from Miri topped the two- day selection trials held at the Royal Selangor Golf Club on Jan 10 and 11, beating five other candidates.

She fired a 80 in Round 1, 74 in Round 2 and 78 in Round 3 for a total of 232 strokes, beating Liyana and Winnie Ng from Selangor into second and third placing respective­ly.

Other juniors taking part in the trials were Vinisha, Maisarah, Nur Maisara and Rebecca.

They all tee- ed off from the men’s tee box ( 6,757 yards).

The top three finishers make the Malaysian team for the Queen Sirikit Cup which is recognised as the official ladies’ tournament in the Asia-Pacific region.

The tournament is hosted on a rotation basis among 14 invited member countries aimed at promoting the standard of ladies golf in the region.

Each country is represente­d by two to three players in the 54-hole stroke play over three rounds.

The best two scores are counted each round as the team’s score. The team with t he lowest combined gross scores over the three rounds is the winner.

Australia will host the event for the first time since 2006. South Korea have dominated the event as 19-time champions.

The tournament provides an excellent exposure for Mirabel who will furthering her studies and golf career in Australia this year.
