Central Zone League to kick off on Feb 16
SIBU: Prize money totaling RM35,000 await top teams and players playing in the inaugural Sarawak Central Zone Soccer League.
The top four teams will bag RM25,000, RM5,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000.
Thetopscorerandbestgoalkeeper will each pocket RM1,000.
“This is the biggest ( league) in terms of prize money and the first of its kind in Sibu,” said coorganiser Jimmy De Rozario.
The tournament is the brainchild of Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee who is its advisor. Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of the organising committee on Sunday evening, he said he wanted to bring back the glory days of Sibu football.
“That is why I want to ensure this is the start of the golden era of football in Sibu. We want to produce more footballers in Sibu and central zone, who can possibly be absorbed into the state team in the near future,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jimmy said they will accept 20 teams at the most – 12 from Sibu and eight from other parts of the central region.

The f ive- month league is jointly organised by Nangka Social, Culture, Sports and Unity Secretariat, PBB Youth Sibu and Nangka Service Centre.
The first match will kick off on Feb 16 with the final on July 28.
