Cen­tral Zone League to kick off on Feb 16

SIBU: Prize money to­tal­ing RM35,000 await top teams and play­ers play­ing in the in­au­gu­ral Sarawak Cen­tral Zone Soc­cer League.

The top four teams will bag RM25,000, RM5,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000.

Thetop­scorerandbest­goal­keeper will each pocket RM1,000.

“This is the big­gest ( league) in terms of prize money and the first of its kind in Sibu,” said coor­gan­iser Jimmy De Rozario.

The tour­na­ment is the brain­child of As­sis­tant Min­is­ter of Ed­u­ca­tion and Tech­no­log­i­cal Re­search Dr An­nuar Ra­paee who is its ad­vi­sor. Speak­ing to re­porters af­ter at­tend­ing a meet­ing of the or­gan­is­ing com­mit­tee on Sun­day evening, he said he wanted to bring back the glory days of Sibu foot­ball.

“That is why I want to en­sure this is the start of the golden era of foot­ball in Sibu. We want to pro­duce more foot­ballers in Sibu and cen­tral zone, who can pos­si­bly be ab­sorbed into the state team in the near fu­ture,” he added.

Mean­while, Jimmy said they will ac­cept 20 teams at the most – 12 from Sibu and eight from other parts of the cen­tral re­gion.

The f ive- month league is jointly or­gan­ised by Nangka So­cial, Cul­ture, Sports and Unity Sec­re­tariat, PBB Youth Sibu and Nangka Ser­vice Cen­tre.

The first match will kick off on Feb 16 with the fi­nal on July 28.
