SIBU: Folks here are urged to take up recycling efforts in a bid to make the town more ‘green’.

According to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain, the council encourages the public to practise recycling at home while also providing recycling centres around the town for them to send their recyclables.

“Recycling will help reduce the volume of waste being sent to the landfill and by doing so, we can prolong the life of our dumpsite,” she told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

Adding on, she encouraged the public to segregate recyclable items such as paper, cans, plastics and glass from their household waste to facilitate the recycling effort.

Rogayah also pointed out that SMC is continuously carrying out awareness programmes to encourage more people to take up recycling.

“The council also engages with the local community (such as in Taman Seduan, Pulau Li Hua, Taman Belatok, Taman Apollo and Kolej Laila Taib) to go houseto-house on the 1st and 15th of each month to collect recyclables.”

Based on a 2010 survey carried out in major towns in Sarawak, the composition of waste includes food perishables (35 per cent), paper (19 per cent), soft plastic (11 per cent), hard plastic (five per cent), garden waste (five per cent), disposable diapers (five per cent), glass (three per cent) and wood (two per cent), while the rest comprises metal and construction waste.

For the record, SMC launched its ‘Say No To Plastic Bags 2.0’ campaign on Jan1 last year to curtail the use of plastic bags, while in July 2017, it increased the compound for littering, from RM20 to RM500, in a bid to keep the town clean.
