Hope Place presents wheelchair, other aid to diabetic widow

-

KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching recently presented a wheelchair and other basic assistance to a widow from Kampung Sinjan in Petra Jaya, who is among the 190 families on its list of recipients.

Founder Kelvin Wan and staffer Yong Tiong Yieng presented the aid to 60-year- old Fatimah Abdullah, who suffers from diabetes and has difficulty walking to due to a kidney ailment.

Apart from the wheelchair, Fatimah also received food items and adult diapers.

According to a press release from Hope Place yesterday, the widow lives with her 27-year- old daughter who is unable to work as she has to care for her mother full time.

“Fatimah’s three other children live elsewhere with their respective family. They are unable to help much as, like most other people, they too have their own financial struggles.

“The daughter living with her is unable to work as she needs to take care of her mother, meaning the two of them do not have any source of income,” said the press release.

It also mentioned that Fatimah is currently not receiving any other assistance from other bodies or the Welfare Department.

“She used to suffer from depression but is better now after joining a counselling programme run by Sarawak General Hospital.”

Hope Place carries out aid deliveries once every three months because of the many families on its list of recipients.

Those who receive aid include the disabled, single mothers with school-going children, abandoned elderly, and those who earn below RM500 a month.
