Good Samaritans aid cancer patient with CNY ‘angpau’, necessities

-

KUCHING: A cancer patient living at RPR Batu Gong near Siburan recently received contributions from a group of good Samaritans in conjunction with the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations.

The group’s representative, voluntary social worker Lim Chee Haw, said they raised funds as ‘angpau’ (cash gift) as well as buying rice, cooking oil, snacks and other food items for 48-yearold Bong Say Fong, who suffers from nose and throat cancer.

“We have assisted Bong and his family every year as we are concerned with their plight who are living on hard times. The welfare assistance from the government and aid from family and friends are barely enough to supplement the meagre income of her husband.

“I have lived through poverty and hardship during my younger years, and I understand their predicament,” said Lim, a retired marine police personnel now devoted to charity work.

He thanked a Mr Law and family from Foochow Road No 2, Fook Lai Construction in MJC Batu Kawa, a Mr Hii and Mr Chia from Jalan Matang, and others for their assistance in this latest charity act.

On a related matter, Lim said he could also assist poor families who require coffins for the funeral of a departed family member. He said that cash donations from good Samaritans are ‘ parked’ at a coffin shop here to be used whenever a genuine request was received.

So far, such assistance has been rendered even to families in the rural areas including Kampung Sadir in Puncak Borneo, Sungai Apong here, Kampung Murud Plaman near Serian, Kampung Sinjog near Siburan, Kampung Sabang in Simunjan, Kampung Tanah Merah at Mile 27 of Kuching- Serian Road, and Kampung Mantung Marau.

The latest to receive such assistance was a family from Kampung Sira, Padawan for the funeral of an elderly man.

According to Lim, the assistance is of great help for poor families who cannot afford to buy coffin although the donors may have donated their money out of an old belief that it can reverse their bad luck.

“I can be contacted at 082248153 or 016- 8070388 if you need help for this service. Don’t look for me in Facebook, Whatsapp or Wechat because I do not have any social media account,” he added.
