‘Drug awareness programmes more effective if all involved’

MIRI: Drug awareness programmes ought to be expanded to reach all segments of society, as part of efforts to eradicate the menace.

Miri Resident Mastapa Julaihi who said this pointed out that combating drug abuse should not be left solely in the hands of the government or agencies like the National Anti- Drug Agency (AADK), but also involve the community to have wider and more effective reach.

implementi­ng programmes related to drug prevention, treatment and rehabilita­tion,” he said when officiatin­g at a roadshow here yesterday, held in conjunctio­n with the state-level National Anti-Drug Celebratio­n Month.

Mastapa said by adopting a holistic and inclusive approach, all segments of society will have a part to play in tackling the issue of drug abuse.

“This in turn will help develop an active community, thus creating a quality living environmen­t that is safe and peaceful.”

The roadshow began in Kuching and covered Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu before ending here.

It was organised by the state Social Developmen­t Council and the Ministry of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Developmen­t.

Among those present at the event yesterday were Miri mayor Adam Yii, Miri District Officer Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf and AADK Sarawak director Wan Madihi Wan Salleh.
