Chong: No more monopoly on calibration of weighing machines

-

KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs ( KPDNHEP) will review the policy on the appointment of companies doing calibration on weighing machines across the country.

Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen said the previous government had appointed only one company to do the job, resulting in monopoly – something the Pakatan Harapan ( PH) federal government is working to eradicate.

“The contract awarded by the previous government to the one company is soon to expire. The new government will not allow monopoly businesses to continue,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

However, he said he had no details on the said company or on the contract awarded to it by the previous administration.

He made these comments when prompted for response to a recent social media post blaming him and the ministry for not conducting calibration for weighing machines.

AccordingtoChong, theMalaysia Competition Commission under his ministry is responsible for encouraging competition in all fields and help put a stop to any monopolistic businesses.

He said the ministry will decide in due course which companies would be appointed to carry out the calibration of weighing machines in the country.

He pointed out that such calibration must be conducted once a year as stipulated under the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
