Retirement home continues to receive donations from Good Samaritans

KUCHING: The Home of Santa Clara, a retirement home for Catholic nuns located at Jalan Airport here, has received another round of contributi­ons from a group of Good Samaritans, brought together by voluntary social worker Lim Chee Haw.

In a simple ceremony held recently, Lim handed over the donations comprising food items and adult diapers to the home’s representa­tive Sr Emelda Yen.

According to Lim, the Good Samaritans ‘ have a soft spot’ for Home of Santa Clara, adding that they would do whatever they could to help reduce any expenditur­e burden borne by the retirement home.

“We are happy to assist Home of Santa Clara. We never let the difference­s in religious beliefs and racial groups to stop us from pursuing this charity act,” said Lim, a retired Marine Police personnel who is now devoted to doing charity work.

He thanked a Mr Law and family from Foochow Road No 2, Fook Lai Constructi­on in Batu Kawa New Township, and others for their assistance in this latest charity act.

On a related matter, Lim said he could also assist poor families requiring coffins for the funeral of a departed family member.

So far, this assistance has been rendered to families from Kampung Sadir in Puncak Borneo, Sungai Apong here, Kampung Murud Plaman near Serian, Kampung Sinjog near Siburan, Kampung Sabang in Simunjan, Kampung Tanah Merah at Mile 27 of KuchingSer­ian Road, and Kampung Mantung Marau.

The latest to receive this assistance was a family from Kampung Sira in Padawan, for the funeral of an elderly man on Feb 20.

Lim said the assistance had greatly helped poor families who could not afford to buy coffins/

“The donors could have donated their money out of an old belief that it ( purchasing coffins for others) could reverse any bad luck,” said Lim.
