MCA and MIC to explore new alliance
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA and MIC are mulling a new alliance after believing that the coalition with Umno in Barisan Nasional (BN) no longer reflects the true intentions of unity among the parties.
Their respective presidents, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Tan Sri S A Vigneswaran in a joint statement yesterday said that the foundations of BN had been challenged and threatened when there was no mutual respect and there was a breach of unity within the component parties.
“MCA and MIC are therefore left with no choice but to move on to explore a new alliance to ref lect the true intentions of unity in diversity of its original intent. MCA and MIC, being representatives of their respective communities, acknowledge that the metamorphosis of BN to its present form has been rejected by their communities.
“Therefore, it was calling for its dissolution and restructuring to return to its original spirit and intent,” the statement said.
They said the uncalled-for racial remarks by BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz during a political ceramah in Semenyih have further damaged the ties between the three founding parties.
“Mohamed Nazri’s repeated racial remarks, perceived to be from Umno, and its continued silence had cracked the foundation of mutual respect that BN stood for all this while,” they said adding that the appointment of Nazri as the BN secretary-general itself is illegal and is not recognised by both MCA and MIC.
Therefore, MCA and MIC urge the BN Supreme Council to hold a meeting immediately to decide on the fate of coalition as MCA on its annual general assembly meeting on Dec 2 resolved to moot the dissolution of BN to reforge a new alliance, the statement said.
